Aims of the Society

E-mail Print

The Bishopston Society was formed in 2002 by local residents. Our aim is to maintain and improve the character, amenities and  architecture of the area. We have nearly 150 members and an active committee with a range of interests and local knowledge.

In brief, we keep an eye on planning proposals, maintain close links with local campaigning groups and seek to improve the design of buildings, the environment, the amenities and facilities of Bishopston.

More specifically, what we do is:

  •     Support proposals which enhance the environment and people’s lives, including improving pavements, dealing with litter and offensive graffiti which has been bought to our attention
  •     Keep track of planning applications and other proposals, responding to them in detail, to the Planning department, in order to provide support to local residents and encourage good design
  •     As the Gloucester Road from the Arches to Ashley Down Road has become a CIA (Cumulative Impact Area) we look at (and formally comment on) applications for new licences and extended hours to see if they improve, enhance or have a detrimental effect on our area
  •    Hold public meetings with speakers talking on local matters – the meeting ends with an open forum where people can bring matters that concern them to the attention of the meeting
  •     Maintain local close links with groups – locally and elsewhere in Bristol and co-ordinate on matters of mutual concern e.g. residents parking zones
  •     Publish a half yearly Newsletter for all members – who we consult and provide support over a range of issues and initiatives
  •     Run this website (www.bishopstonsociety.org.uk) that aims to keep you up to date and informed  about local, and sometimes wider, issues
